Refugee's story: Victoria and her children travelled for 15 hours on a train without food or drink

Victoria fled with her children from the Ukrainian town of Cherkasy. They travelled to safety for almost a day and a half without having anything to drink or eat. When they finally arrived in Poland, they did not know where to go. They were in a completely new place. Fortunately, a Caritas worker helped them. Read the whole story.

On an icy bus to a foreign land. Then, refugees are safe.

Over three million people have left Ukraine since the Russian invasion. The international Caritas network is also helping with the biggest migration crisis in recent times. It cares for refugees who have decided to leave the country, as well as those who have been driven from their homes by the war but have remained in Ukraine.

Ryabych Lyudmyla Mykolajivna from the town Rivne, the centre of the Volhynian Bohemians, escaped with her grandson from Ukraine. During their journey, they were stranded at the border in the middle of the forests. After arriving in Prague, she stayed at the Caritas hotel Marianeum. The war in Ukraine has already forced Lyudmila and her son to move twice

Although the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the protracted war has started in 2014 when the Donetsk and Luhansk regions self-proclaimed the independent republics. Lyudmila and her son had to leave their home in Luhansk back then. Now, eight years later, the same sad situation found them in the suburbs of Kyiv. Fortunately, thanks to the help of Caritas, they have now found a temporary home in Ternopil, located in western Ukraine.
