Caritas for Ukraine fundraising campaign will support psychological care

For the fifth year now, Ukrainians have been facing the consequences of Russia’s aggression, from missile attacks and power outages to damaged infrastructure and disruptions to essential services. Some have been sent to the front lines, others have lost relatives or their homes, while many spend nights rushing to shelters because of the escalating shelling. The war in Ukraine affects everyone – even the ones living near the borders with the European Union. In western Ukraine, we therefore support the psychological care and renovation of the Mental Health Centre for children and youths in Lviv. These activities are funded by the public campaign Caritas for Ukraine.

Children’s books from Ukraine have travelled around the world, with help from Caritas

Tetiana comes from Kharkiv. She has never been abroad; however, her interactive books for children are well known, for instance, in Italy, Germany, or the United States of America. She began creating them during the war, after her family had fled to Uzhhorod in western Ukraine. Like many refugees, she must have had to change her life from its roots. Because she had always enjoyed handicrafts, she decided to devote herself to bookmaking. Thanks to a business grant from Caritas Czech Republic, she was able to purchase equipment that has made her work much easier and enriched it significantly.

This winter, Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid caused extensive power outages. As the war entered its fifth year, households were left without heating, electricity, or water during extremely low temperatures. People in the Czech Republic did not hesitate to show their solidarity. In this article, you will learn where the help from your contributions to the Caritas for Ukraine fundraising campaign was directed. Together, we were able to provide immediate assistance, for example, in Kyiv and Kharkiv. We have shown that our support is unbreakable—just like the determination and courage of the people of Ukraine. Thank you!

In one minute, they lost everything – the stories of people from eastern Ukraine

Humanitarian aid can be measured in food packages, litres of water, or tons of firewood. But behind those figures, real people’s stories are hidden – stories of those from Eastern Ukraine who, like us today, once owned houses, worked, and raised children. In 2022, they lost everything in a matter of minutes. Many decided to leave their hometowns and move to the relative safety of western Ukraine, such as Ivano-Frankivsk. One of them was Iryna: “People came here with small suitcases. They packed their entire lives into one bag. They constantly follow the news from home. They live in hope of returning, no matter what.” These are their stories.

The bombing blew out windows and doors. The shelter's residents in Kryvyi Rih found comfort with Caritas Czech Republic

On the eve of winter, damp and cold prevailed in the rooms of the Polytechnic College dormitory in the frontline town of Kryvyi Rih. A drone attack damaged the windows of the building, sheltering more than 120 evacuees from the combat zone. Most of them are single elderly people and people with disabilities. As part of a life-saving aid project, we replaced the windows so that the shelter's residents could stay warm.
